Through a global network of COVID-19 patients, chronic illness allies, and health and disability advocates, Body Politic breaks down barriers to patient-driven whole-person care and well-being, particularly for historically marginalized communities by facilitating peer-support, cultivating patient-led research and public education, and leading community-based advocacy.
We founded Body Politic as a queer feminist wellness collective in March 2018. Based on personal experience and community feedback, we created space for inclusivity, accessibility, and crucial discussions about the very real connection between wellness, politics, and personal identity.
In March 2020, our COVID-19 Support Group launched when Founder Fiona Lowenstein and Board Member Sabrina Bleich became sick with coronavirus. Since our launch, the Body Politic Covid-19 Support Group on Slack grew to over 14,000 members from 30+ countries. Our support group shut down in May 2023 due to lack of funding, but we offer a comprehensive (and printable) guide to support group options on our support page.
our vision
In the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic, we see an opportunity for a paradigm shift, where those who have been historically marginalized in health, medicine and wellness have the tools, relationships, and the responsive systems and practitioners to serve as leaders and effective partners in their own care and well-being.
Body Type is our online publication on all things concerning health, wellness, politics, and personal identity. From “Patient Spotlights” to guides to navigating disability benefits or supporting a friend with a chronic illness, Body Type is all about patient-centered content.
Our support group, which is housed on the Slack app, provides thousands of COVID patients and caregivers with online support, vital resources, workshops with experts, and advocacy opportunities.
Since April 2018, Body Politic has been programming events on the intersections of wellness and social justice. Our more recent virtual event programming focuses on providing resources and information to people with Long COVID, and related illnesses and disabilities.
